The shoes

This is a story told by one of Linda's clients.

This person was afflicted by very low self-esteem.
Among other signs, the shoes she wore were in ratty shape-- misshapen, with holes and fraying.
When Linda saw those shoes, she said, "We're going shopping."
They went off, purchased some nice-looking well-fitting shoes.

As they left, the client put the old shoes into the box, ready to take them home.
Linda stopped, gently took the box from her,

... and proceeded to a trash barrel.

I think the lesson was, you don't need to feel unworthy of decent shoes.
Leave the self-deprecation behind.

Move on. In your new shoes.
